Heavy Rain Triggers Flooding and Landslides in Northern Thailand

Tak: Heavy overnight rain triggered flash floods and caused the Moei River to overflow, inundating border areas in Tak province and disrupting transport in nearby Mae Hong Son.

According to Thai News Agency, in Tak, torrential rainfall across five border districts sent floodwaters pouring into Mae Sot Municipal Municipality. Commercial areas, including the local fresh market, were submerged under 30 to 50 centimeters of water, prompting local officials to assist residents and evacuate vulnerable individuals.

Along the Thai-Myanmar border, the Moei River overflowed its banks by more than a meter, flooding both Myawaddy in Myanmar and Rim Moei Market on the Thai side. Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation issued a high-level Cell Broadcast emergency alert to residents in Mae Sot and Mae Ramat districts, urging immediate evacuations and the relocation of property to higher ground.

In neighboring Mae Hong Son province, rising waters in the Yuam River flooded low-lying communities in Mae Sariang district. A landslide also downed power poles on Highway 108 connecting Mae Sariang and Chiang Mai in Sop Moei district, blocking traffic while highway authorities worked to clear the road.
