Bangkok: Heavy rainfall and strong winds wreaked havoc across Bangkok, prompting authorities to launch an urgent response to clear fallen trees and repair damaged homes in several districts. The Permanent Secretary of Bangkok has mobilized district offices and the Bangkok Mass Rapid Response Unit (BEST) teams to assist the public and address the widespread damage following the severe weather.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Narong Ruangsri, the Permanent Secretary of Bangkok, provided an update on the situation following the adverse weather conditions on the evening of May 4th. Reports highlighted significant damage, including fallen trees and property destruction across various districts. In response, the Public Works Department, Municipal Police Department, and Sanitation Department have been tasked with removing debris to ensure roads are reopened and aid is delivered to affected residents promptly.
In Lat Krabang district, officials identified five high-risk areas where more than 15 houses sustained damage. Temporary roofing materials have been supplied, and plans are underway to establish shelters for those in need. Additionally, in Khlong Sam Wa and Huai Khwang districts, BEST unit teams have successfully trimmed tree branches that had obstructed roads and damaged properties.
Efforts in Wang Thonglang and Saphan Sung districts are focusing on collaboration with the Metropolitan Electricity Authority to safely remove tree branches entangled in power lines, mitigating potential hazards. Meanwhile, in Phra Nakhon and Min Buri districts, officials are actively working to restore normalcy by addressing and rectifying the damage caused.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has cautioned that the region is currently experiencing a summer storm phase, characterized by unpredictable weather. With a 60% chance of thunderstorms forecasted for today and rain expected to persist, the public is urged to remain vigilant and avoid high-risk areas during travel.
