Tokyo: Japan continues to experience heavy snowfall, which is expected to have long-term effects. Heavy snowfall continues across northern and western Japan along the Sea of Japan coast, and is expected to persist until the end of the weekend.
According to Thai News Agency, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported that heavy snowfall continued in northern regions from overnight until 6:00 AM Wednesday. In Sukayu Ward, Aomori Prefecture, the accumulated snowfall reached 24 centimeters, while Wakkanai Airport in Hokkaido and Tadami City in Fukushima Prefecture received 20 centimeters of snow. This severe winter low-pressure system is expected to remain until Sunday, resulting in widespread heavy snowfall, particularly in western and northern parts of the country, including along the Sea of Japan coast. Furthermore, heavy snowfall is possible even in lowland areas.
Furthermore, snowfall may increase rapidly due to the influence of long bands of snow clouds formed from the collision zone of polar air masses in the Sea of Japan. The Meteorological Agency forecasts that over the next 24 hours until Thursday, the Hokuriku and Niigata prefectures are likely to experience accumulated snowfall of up to 80 centimeters. The Kinki and Chugoku regions are expected to receive 70 centimeters, the Tohoku region 60 centimeters, and Hokkaido 50 centimeters. However, the most concerning area to watch is Friday, with forecasts of increased snowfall in many regions, particularly Hokuriku and Niigata, where accumulated snowfall could reach 100 centimeters in 24 hours. Authorities advise the public to prepare for potential impacts such as traffic congestion due to road closures and power outages caused by snow accumulation or avalanches. They also urge people to stock up on food supplies and adjust their schedules to avoid outdoor activities.
