Islamabad: A massive fire at a state hospital in Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan, has claimed the lives of at least 15 infants, with initial reports suggesting a malfunctioning air conditioning system as the cause.

According to Thai News Agency, the fire erupted at approximately 7:00 a.m. local time at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), specifically on the third floor in the maternal and child health ward. This harrowing event is regarded as one of the most catastrophic hospital fires in Pakistan's recent history. The healthcare infrastructure, despite government support, is often plagued by resource shortages and overcapacity, with state hospitals frequently facing criticism over management issues.

At the moment of the disaster, there were 16 newborns in the ward. Thai News Agency further reported that only one infant was safely rescued in time. The incident highlights the critical need for improved safety measures and oversight in healthcare facilities across the nation.

The Prime Minister's office has announced that Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has directed the authorities to conduct an immediate investigation into the incident. In a statement, he stressed the necessity of identifying and holding accountable those responsible with decisive action.

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences, situated in the center of Islamabad, is one of the city's principal state hospitals. It was notably where former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan received brief medical treatment last week.
