Bangkok: The Interior Minister has directed provincial governors and security officials to enhance protective measures for residents in the southern border provinces, emphasizing an increase in the number of armed volunteers.
According to Thai News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul discussed the directive from Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra, which calls for urgent action from the Minister of Interior and the Minister of Defense to address the unrest in the southern border provinces. The focus is primarily on the safety of Thai citizens, particularly Buddhists. Anutin stressed the importance of governors delegating responsibilities so that deputy governors and district chiefs remain on-site to support the community, build confidence, and provide necessary assistance.
When questioned about the prevailing concerns among southern residents regarding violent incidents, Anutin assured that the government has not neglected them. He highlighted the government’s commitment to upholding the law and following the Prime Minister’s directives concerning security measures. The 4th Army, the 9th Provincial Police Region, and other administrative bodies are actively working together to support and assist the local population.
Anutin also noted that during periods of symbolic violence, the public is urged to exercise caution. The government plans to bolster its presence by increasing security forces, establishing checkpoints, and ensuring maximum safety for the public. The Ministry of Interior has been actively training volunteers over the past year to protect citizens and counter potential terrorist activities. These volunteers are trained in handling mass protests and using weapons to maintain public order and security.
