Istanbul to Host 87th World Gymnastics Congress in 2028

Bangkok:The Gymnastics Association of Thailand recently hosted the 86th World Gymnastics Congress on October 4-5, 2026, at the Grand Central Point Hotel, Lumpini, Bangkok. The event was attended by key figures including Mr. Morinari Watanabe, President of the International Gymnastics Federation, and Mr. Abdulrahman Al Shatri, President of the Asian Gymnastics Federation, along with Lt. Cmdr. Sarayut Pattanasak, President of the ASEAN Gymnastics Federation and the Gymnastics Association of Thailand. The congress saw participation from gymnastics executives representing 150 countries, with over 500 attendees.

According to Thai News Agency, a significant meeting was held on October 5th to discuss updates to the rules and regulations governing various disciplines of gymnastics such as artistic, rhythmic, aerobic gymnastics, and parkour. All participating nations agreed on the necessity to modernize and streamline these rules. Mr. Morinari Watanabe accepted the proposed changes, which are set to be implemented in 2027.

The congress also included the selection of the host city for the 87th World Gymnastics Congress in 2028. Both Rome, Italy, and Istanbul, Turkey, submitted bids. Each city presented its case to the attendees, with Rome emphasizing convenient accommodation and diverse dining options, while Istanbul highlighted its comprehensive facilities and cost-saving measures. Ultimately, Istanbul was chosen by a decisive vote of 240-110 out of 350 ballots cast, securing its position as the host city for the 2028 congress.

Dr. Kusumal Prasertsri, Vice President of the Gymnastics Association of Thailand, extended congratulations to Istanbul for being selected to host the event. She reflected on the experience of hosting the congress in Thailand, noting the positive changes it has brought to the gymnastics community and the warm welcome extended to international visitors, who expressed their appreciation and interest in returning to Thailand.
