Karen Buddhist Funeral Rites Explored in Channel 9 Docuseries

Bangkok:Tak-Napassaran Mitthiroj: The program "The Path from Womb to Tomb," airing on Channel 9, will feature a segment this Sunday, October 10th, on Karen Buddhist funeral rites.

According to Thai News Agency, the episode titled "Floating Crematorium and Emptiness" is part of the cultural docuseries "Born to Heaven," supported by the Safe and Creative Media Development Fund. The series explores various beliefs, rituals, traditions, and cultures, aiming to provide viewers with a deeper understanding of these practices.

The upcoming episode will highlight the simplicity and natural aspects of Karen funeral ceremonies. Traditionally, a bamboo crematorium is set up in the forest, and the body is wrapped in cloth with brief, meaningful prayers. These rituals reflect a Buddhist acceptance of death, emphasizing peace and simplicity. Historically, the deceased had to be buried immediately, with strict rules preventing villagers from leaving or outsiders from entering the village until the burial was completed to avoid misfortune.
