Khon Kaen:As temperatures drop with the changing seasons, residents are advised to stay alert to the risks of respiratory illnesses such as the common cold and influenza, along with the health impacts of fine particulate matter, PM 2.5. These concerns are particularly significant for individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions and other vulnerable groups.
According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Nitikorn Soncha, Deputy Director of Medical Affairs at Khon Kaen Hospital, emphasized the heightened risk of viral infections and environmental illnesses during the winter months. The presence of PM 2.5 dust is known to worsen conditions like allergies, asthma, and emphysema, and certain respiratory infections can potentially lead to pneumonia, necessitating proper medical attention.
To mitigate exposure to PM 2.5 dust, it is advised to limit outdoor activities when dust levels are high and to use effective dust-filtering masks, such as the N95, which should fit snugly to the face for optimal protection. Individuals with respiratory issues are encouraged to select masks carefully and to seek guidance from healthcare professionals if needed. While general surgical masks can help curb droplet spread from the wearer, they are less effective against particulate matter compared to specialized filtering masks.
Dr. Nitikorn also highlighted that although dust issues in the Northeast may differ from those in the North, they should not be disregarded, especially in cool weather conditions that can trap pollution. He urged the public to avoid burning garbage and waste materials, which contribute to dust pollution, to help reduce dust sources at their origin.
