Korn Urges Formation of Committee to Oppose Government’s Land Bridge Project

Bangkok: Korn Chatikavanij, Deputy Leader of the Democrat Party and Member of Parliament, has proposed an urgent motion to establish a parliamentary committee to counter the government's push for the Land Bridge Project. He argues that the project is being rushed, lacks transparency, and is not part of the government's stated policy.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Korn issued a statement expressing the Democrat Party's opposition to the Land Bridge project, which he claims is being hastily pursued by the government without adequate consideration or clear information. The project, estimated to cost 1 trillion baht, has been criticized for its lack of inclusion in the election campaign policies of the Bhumjaithai and Pheu Thai parties. Despite not being mentioned in the policy statement to Parliament, it has suddenly become a priority for the government.

Mr. Korn highlighted concerns from shipping companies and academics who doubt the project's economic viability, suggesting that the completed bridge may not be cost-effective. He questioned the project's rationale, pointing out that transporting goods via the land bridge involves costly and time-consuming transfers, which may ultimately lead to the project's abandonment.

He further emphasized the need for the matter to be brought before the House of Representatives, suggesting that the 1 trillion baht budget could be better spent on projects to enhance the southern economy. Proposals include a southern motorway from Narathiwat Province to Bangkok, a double-track electric railway system, and deep-sea ports on both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, all of which could be achieved at a lower cost than the Land Bridge Project.

Mr. Korn called for Parliament to have the opportunity to consult with government agencies and relevant organizations to ensure informed decision-making that prioritizes taxpayer interests.
