Bangkok: Lawyer Tum and his wife, along with several others, appeared in court today in a high-profile fraud case involving Thai businesswoman Jae Aoy. The case, held at the Criminal Court on Ratchadaphisek Road, centers around allegations of fraud, habitual fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit money laundering related to a lottery investment scheme.
According to Thai News Agency, the lawsuit was jointly filed by the Public Prosecutor's Office for Special Cases and Ms. Jatuporn Ubollert, known as "Jae Aoy." The defendants include Mr. Sittra Biabangkerd, also known as "Lawyer Tum," Mrs. Patitta Biabangkerd, or "Duang," his wife, Ms. Pintira Kariwan, or "Dao," Lawyer Tum's wife's sister, and seven others. They are accused of defrauding Ms. Jatuporn of money through the investment scheme.
Ms. Jatuporn arrived at the court this morning, declining to give interviews but appearing confident. Mr. Panthep Pua-pongpun, chairman of the Guardians of the Nation Foundation, also attended to support Ms. Jatuporn and observe the proceedings. He emphasized the separation between the civil and criminal courts, noting that the civil court had dismissed a related petition and ordered the return of assets frozen by the Anti-Money Laundering Office to Lawyer Tum.
The civil case's decision, however, does not impact the criminal case, which has the potential to influence the civil case's outcome. The criminal case is divided into three segments, involving Lawyer Tum, his wife, her sister, and others. So far, four individuals have confessed to charges related to transferring and misreporting funds and have been sentenced, though the public prosecutor is appealing.
Tum and his legal team must now prove their innocence in the criminal court concerning the online lottery scam. The court has scheduled the plaintiff's witness testimony for three consecutive days, from March 4 to 6. Today, Tum, summoned from prison, is expected to cross-examine the plaintiffs personally.
Reporters observed Tum appearing thinner and confident despite his prison attire. He briefly greeted the media before joining the court proceedings, marking a significant day in this ongoing legal battle.
