Chiang Rai: Floodwaters inundated numerous communities in Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province, following heavy rain throughout the night. The deluge caused the Mae Sai River to overflow, with water levels reaching up to 1 meter in certain areas. Communities under the first Thai-Myanmar border bridge were particularly affected, as the water spilled over large barriers, flooding riverside neighborhoods.
According to Thai News Agency, the relentless overnight rain caused the Sai River to breach its embankments, affecting various communities, including Ban Tham Pha Chom, Sai Lom Joy Market, Talat Noi Mueang Daeng, Mueang Daeng Community, Mai Lung Khan Community, and Koh Sai Community. The water surged into homes across these areas, with depths ranging from 50 centimeters to 1 meter. Residents were caught off guard as the flooding occurred in the middle of the night, prompting many to hurriedly relocate their belongings to avoid damage.
In the vicinity of the first Thai-Myanmar border bridge, the rising water levels in the Sai River overwhelmed the big bag barriers, leading to widespread flooding in the adjacent communities. This area was notably affected by severe flooding last year, and the current situation poses concerns as upstream regions in Myanmar continue to experience heavy rain, potentially exacerbating the flooding in Mae Sai District.
