Man Arrested for Vandalizing Campaign Signs in Khon Kaen Over Policy Discontent

Khon kaen: A man was apprehended for vandalizing campaign posters of parliamentary candidates from two major parties in the heart of Khon Kaen city. He confessed to being dissatisfied with the political policies of certain parties. Police are expanding the investigation to prosecute him according to the law.

According to Thai News Agency, CCTV footage captured a man using a knife to vandalize campaign signs of two major political parties in several areas of Mueang Khon Kaen district, leading to significant damage to the signs. The candidates have filed police reports demanding constructive political competition.

Recently, police at Khon Kaen City Police Station detained Mr. Jirapong, 41, in front of a convenience store on Anamai Road in Khon Kaen Municipality. They questioned him regarding his involvement in vandalizing campaign signs of candidates for Member of Parliament in Constituency 1, representing the Bhumjaithai Party and the Prachachon Party, which were installed along Ban Kok Road, Soi 8. He admitted to committing the act.

After further questioning, Mr. Jirapong revealed that on the day of the incident, he was riding his motorcycle along the road and smelled marijuana, which reminded him of the Bhumjaithai Party's marijuana liberalization policy. This policy had contributed to a close relative's marijuana addiction.

As for the Orange Party, Mr. Jirapong mentioned his previous support and voting for them. However, their use of Article 112 (L¨se-Majest©) in their campaign displeased him as a monarchy supporter. Consequently, he vandalized campaign signs in the subdistricts of Nai Mueang, Ban Pet, and Mueang Kao in Mueang Khon Kaen District due to his disagreement with their policy.

Police escorted the suspect to the crime scene to identify the location and searched his residence before further questioning by investigators. They are also examining his mobile phone data to determine any connections to other individuals.
