Bangkok: Mr. Maris Sengiampong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reiterated Thailand’s commitment to resolving the ongoing Thai-Cambodian border issues through peaceful means, emphasizing negotiations and adherence to international law. This announcement was made during his participation in the High-level Political Dialogue on Sustainable Development at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, USA, via VDO Conference, where he chaired discussions on the plan to assist Thai nationals in Cambodia.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Maris utilized the opportunity to engage with high-level leaders from various countries about the escalating tensions at the Thai-Cambodian border. The situation has been aggravated by continuous attacks from the Cambodian army, including the deployment of explosives, which have violated Thailand’s territorial integrity. Mr. Maris addressed the United Nations Security Council meeting, chaired by Pakistan, affirming Thailand’s stance on resolving international disputes through bilateral negotiations and compliance with the United Nations Charter.
Mr. Maris reported that during bilateral meetings, he engaged with the Pakistani Foreign Minister, the United Nations Secretary-General, and other member country ministers, including Japan’s Deputy Foreign Minister. Thailand has formally protested against Cambodia’s actions, citing violations of the Ottawa Convention due to Cambodia’s explosive use along the border, which resulted in civilian casualties.
Mr. Maris criticized Cambodia for misrepresenting information to third countries and falsely suggesting Thailand’s unwillingness to negotiate. He affirmed Thailand’s readiness for constructive dialogue, contrasting it with Cambodia’s approach.
The Foreign Minister confirmed recent attacks by the Cambodian army on Thai civilian areas, leading to injuries and fatalities. He warned that if these actions persist, Thailand is prepared to implement self-defense measures within the international legal framework.
During the VDO Conference, Mr. Maris coordinated with domestic and international agencies to organize a comprehensive evacuation plan for Thais in Cambodia. The plan includes increasing flights between Phnom Penh and Bangkok. Thais in Cambodia are advised to stay informed through the Royal Thai Embassy, Consulate-General, and Consular Affairs Department. Mr. Maris reiterated Thailand’s commitment to peaceful negotiations but emphasized the country’s duty to protect its citizens and sovereignty against continued aggression.
In a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Thai airlines and relevant stakeholders discussed evacuation logistics. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, tasked Mr. Kritchanon Aiyapan and Air Chief Marshal Manat Chavanaprayoon with coordinating the travel arrangements for Thais wishing to return due to the border unrest.
Four Thai airlines currently operate flights on the Bangkok-Cambodia route, with three others ready to support. The airlines collectively offer multiple weekly flights with varying seat capacities to facilitate the return of Thai nationals. Air Chief Marshal Manat stated that approximately 500 Thais are in Cambodia, with arrangements being made to ensure their return within a few days.
