Bangkok: MEA advises electricity users to update the meter owner's name to protect their rights and prevent incurring debts from others. MEA, or the Metropolitan Electricity Authority, emphasizes the importance of updating the ownership details on electricity meters when there is a change in the ownership of premises, such as through sales, transfers, or leasing. This step ensures that the current resident or tenant is recognized as the rightful owner.
According to Thai News Agency, updating the meter owner's name not only safeguards rights and benefits, such as MEA Points, but also helps avoid potential liabilities for outstanding electricity bills. If payments are overdue or if there is illegal electricity usage, such as theft, MEA's regulations mandate that the debt collection and any legal actions will be directed towards the individual listed as the "meter owner."
Electricity users wishing to update the meter owner's name can do so online via the MEA e-Service platform or by visiting any MEA district office. The process requires only the new owner's documents for name changes and the original owner's documents for canceling electricity services. Required documents include a national ID card for individuals or a certificate of incorporation for legal entities, proof of connection to the electricity usage location, and a power of attorney document if applicable.
