Minister of Culture Directs Restoration and Development of Ancient Sites to Boost Cultural Tourism

Chachoengsao: The Minister of Culture has tasked the Fine Arts Department with restoring and developing ancient sites as part of a broader government initiative to transform them into cultural tourist attractions while addressing potential flood impacts.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Minister of Culture, led a meeting at the Marupongsiriphat Meeting Room in Chachoengsao Provincial Hall to review the Ministry’s progress on economic stimulus and system strengthening projects. She emphasized the importance of adhering to the government’s 157 billion baht economic plan, focusing on timely budget spending, compliance with procurement regulations, and transparent contract management. All projects are to be completed by September 30, 2026, with procurement and contract processes to be finalized by September 30, 2025.

The Fine Arts Department has been allocated a budget for 73 economic stimulus projects, totaling 575.5109 million baht, aimed at revitalizing ancient sites across 39 provinces. These sites are to be developed not only as educational resources but also as significant cultural tourism destinations. The projects involve illuminating ancient sites for nighttime visits, restoring sites with tourism potential, and upgrading facilities like standard restrooms for tourists.

Furthermore, the department has been instructed to safeguard ancient and cultural sites against potential natural disasters such as storms and floods, particularly in high-risk northern regions. A risk assessment is underway, with strategic plans being formulated for protection and problem-solving. In case of any incidents, immediate reporting is required, and if restoration is needed, budget provisions, either from the department’s funds or central emergency reserves, will be considered urgently.
