Bangkok: The Ministry of Education and Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) have joined forces to launch a pilot "International Teacher Training Program," offering full scholarships to attract talented students. The initiative aims to elevate the skills of Thai students to align with global standards.
According to Thai News Agency, the Ministry of Education and SWU are working together on this pilot program, which has been positively received by the Teachers Council of Thailand. The Council has committed to promoting professional standards in support of this endeavor. Mr. Prasert Chantharawongthong, Minister of Education, met with the Faculty of Education at SWU, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kittikun Rungruang, to discuss policies for enhancing teacher training to improve Thai children's education.
Mr. Prasert emphasized the need for cooperation in teacher development, with a focus on strengthening English language skills to boost the country's international competitiveness. SWU is set to serve as a model by implementing an international teacher training program that uses English as the primary medium of instruction for subjects like mathematics, science, and primary education.
The program aims to address the high costs of international programs and the limited income potential of the teaching profession by offering scholarships or special allowances to attract talented students. The Teachers Council of Thailand is tasked with collaborating with the Faculty of Education to draft a formal agreement, initially selecting 30 students to participate in the pilot phase. This initiative is expected to bridge educational gaps and set a precedent for expansion to other institutions.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Polrapee Thummaphan from the Teachers Council highlighted the project's potential to improve student learning quality, with the Council ready to support professional standards and licensing. Additionally, the Council is collaborating with organizations like the British Council to enhance English skills among student and primary school teachers. He anticipates more organizations will join in supporting the program to alleviate costs for students.
Assistant Professor, Acting Lieutenant, Dr. Kittikun emphasized the importance of training teachers as a foundational step to nation-building. The project, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, seeks to create a supportive system for students and address the urgent need for qualified personnel in the country.
