Bangkok: Film studio 185 Films Co., Ltd. has explained why the Thai movie “A Useful Ghost” failed to be included in the list for the 98th Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
According to Thai News Agency, the company issued a statement addressing a communication error that led to the film’s exclusion from the 86 films announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for consideration. They extended gratitude to those who supported the film, as well as to the National Federation of Motion Picture Associations for selecting it as Thailand’s representative.
The statement clarified that the issue stemmed from a miscommunication during the application process, which is managed by the film’s distributor. This oversight resulted in an incomplete submission to the Academy within the required timeframe. Upon realizing the mistake, the company reached out to the Academy to explain the situation and request a review. Despite their efforts, the Academy maintained its original decision, which the company respects.
185 Films Co., Ltd., alongside its co-production partners Haut Les Mains, MOMO FILM CO, Mayana Films, and Best Friend Forever, expressed regret and apologized to various stakeholders, including the Thai film industry and audiences. The company highlighted the film’s success, mentioning its debut at the Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the top award. The film continues to screen at international festivals and compete for further accolades, showcasing the potential of Thai cinema.
