Mukdahan: The Department of Highways is advancing the construction of the Nakavithi road along the Mekong River, aiming to enhance regional connectivity and support cross-border trade.
According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Rural Roads is spearheading the development of the Nakavithi road, which stretches over 43 kilometers from the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge (No. 2) to Phra That Phanom in Mukdahan and Nakhon Phanom provinces. The construction is currently 44% complete and is anticipated to be finished by March 2027. Mr. Pichit Hunsiri, Director-General of the Department of Rural Roads, provided an update on the project's progress, highlighting its significance in improving transportation and tourism in the region.
The project involves the construction and enhancement of rural highways MH.3015 and NP.3015, featuring a reinforced concrete road with a 6-meter wide carriageway and shoulders ranging from 0 to 2 meters on each side. A drainage system will be implemented in community areas, and 11 bridges along the route will be expanded. The project also includes the construction of rest areas and viewpoints, all within a budget of 615 million baht. The road begins near the Mukdahan Provincial Governor's Residence and extends to Phra That Phanom, covering a total distance of 43.485 kilometers. Notable landmarks along the route include the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge (2nd) (Mukdahan-Savannakhet), Manophirom Beach, Wat Song Khon, and Kaeng Kabao.
The Department of Rural Roads has also integrated local cultural elements into the project's design, promoting tourism while supporting international trade and transportation. The road signs for 'Naga Way' reflect local identity, showcasing the Naga serpent and elements of the Mekong River, which are culturally significant to the people of Isan. The design incorporates natural colors and symbols of the Naga fireballs and the full moon, representing regional beliefs and culture.
Upon completion, the Nakavithi road project will significantly enhance the rural road network's capacity, supporting tourism, transportation, and trade between Thailand and its neighboring countries. It aims to provide a convenient, fast, and safe travel experience for both residents and tourists, transforming the road into a sustainable scenic route along the Mekong River.
