NESC Awaits Decision on Diesel Price Increase Amid Fuel Supply Issues

Bangkok: Anticipation builds as the National Economic and Social Council (NESC) awaits a decision on diesel price increases. Minister Attaphol emphasized that adjustments will be made gradually until the ceiling of 33 baht is reached, matching Malaysia's rate. He also signaled that electricity prices will remain frozen for the May-August period.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Atthapol Rerkpiboon, Minister of Energy, stated in an interview after presiding over the "Energy Saving Plus Squared" event at Synergy Hall, EnCO C building, that measures regarding diesel fuel prices are being considered to adjust the price ceiling to approximately 33 baht per liter. This is to align with market mechanisms and retail prices in neighboring countries such as Malaysia. The price increase will be gradual and phased to minimize the impact on the cost of living for the public, rather than a sudden increase to the set ceiling.

Regarding solutions to the shortage and transportation issues, it is confirmed that crude oil reserves are sufficient. Approximately 3 million barrels were recently purchased, which will last for several days. The problem of fuel running out at gas stations in some areas stems from logistical issues. Demand has surged 2-3 times higher than normal, causing fuel transport trucks to be unable to keep up with the volume of deliveries. Measures have been implemented, including requesting fuel depots to operate 24/7 and coordinating with the Ministry of Transport and the police to extend the operating hours for fuel trucks, allowing them to travel more freely within urban areas.

Furthermore, there is a push to promote biofuels by increasing the price differential between base oil and biofuel blends such as E20, B10, and B20 to encourage the public to switch to alternative energy sources. This will ultimately lead to a reduction in oil imports. It was also revealed today that a joint team has been established between the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Commerce, and the Ministry of Energy to investigate and apprehend those who hoard oil or take advantage of the situation by selling it at inflated prices.

Regarding electricity pricing measures, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) is scheduled to finalize options for the May-August 2026 period tomorrow (March 18). The Minister of Energy stated that alternative pricing figures will need to be developed, but the government's policy is to freeze electricity prices for now. Various factors will be considered to prevent any price increases at this time. However, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) recently announced in a LINE group for energy journalists that the press conference scheduled for Wednesday, March 18, 2026, has been canceled. A new press conference date will be announced to all media outlets once it is finalized.
