Bangkok: Panthongtae Shinawatra, known as Oak, and Pintongta Shinawatra Kunakornwong, known as Aim, visited their father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as he approaches the end of his five-month prison term. Thaksin's attorney, Winyat Chatmontri, also accompanied them to the prison. Before entering, Oak and Aim interacted with Red Shirt supporters who had gathered to show their support.
According to Thai News Agency, Klong Prem Central Prison is currently gathering information on all inmates to assess their eligibility for general conditional release, amidst rumors that Thaksin may be granted parole in May. The process involves evaluations by three committees: one at the prison level, another at the Department of Corrections level, and a final one at the Ministry of Justice level. Once approved, the inmate will be released on parole and placed on probation at a location determined by their sponsor.
During their visit, Ms. Phinthongta mentioned that her father's health has improved after some rest, despite previous concerns. She also shared insights into a 10-day cooking course offered in the prison, which includes various other training activities such as drawing classes. These programs aim to enhance the emotional well-being and mental health of inmates.
When questioned about whether Thaksin had any message for Dr. Yotsanan Wongsawat, the Pheu Thai Party's candidate for prime minister, Ms. Pintongta simply smiled and denied any such communication. Additionally, when asked about the submission of documents for Thaksin's parole consideration, Ms. Pintongta chose not to comment. Instead, she expressed gratitude to the Red Shirt supporters before leaving the prison premises.
