Parliament to Debate Extradition of Chanonphat Naksua for DSI Investigation

Bangkok: Parliament is set to debate an urgent agenda item on May 28th regarding whether to extradite Chanonphat Naksua to the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) for investigation into online gambling and transnational organized crime. Naksua has expressed his readiness to prove his innocence and hopes to set a precedent in Parliament.

According to Thai News Agency, the agenda item will be addressed urgently in the parliamentary session to determine if the DSI can summon Mr. Chanonphat to hear the charges and undergo interrogation. This is required by legal process, as members of Parliament have immunity during sessions, necessitating prior permission from the House of Representatives for any actions related to detention or investigation.

On May 25th, Naksua posted his intention to comply with the DSI's request for testimony, emphasizing his willingness for a transparent investigation. He aims to demonstrate his innocence through the judicial process and hopes to establish a new parliamentary standard for handling suspicions without discrimination.

The Bhumjaithai Party, represented by spokesperson Ms. Nan Boonyathida Somchai, stated the party will observe the situation. The party's MPs understand that Naksua is willing to testify. A vote from Bhumjaithai depends on Mr. Chanonphat's actions. If he testifies and informs parliament, the issue may be resolved without a vote. However, if parliamentary discussion is needed, the party will consider Mr. Chanonphat's stance. As the ruling party, they do not wish to influence votes unduly.

For the Democrat Party, spokesperson Mr. Pongsakorn Kwanmuang mentioned that Mr. Chanonphat will have a chance to explain to Parliament if he experienced any abuse of power by the executive branch. Should his explanation be lacking, the legal process will proceed.

Regarding the Kla Tham Party, spokesperson Mr. Atthakorn Sirilatthayakon shared that the party's executives are discussing the matter with MPs. The party intends to address the issue based on legal principles rather than individual benefit.
