Pavin Calls for Probe into Phisan Manawapat’s Qualifications and Ethics

Bangkok: Pavin Chakri Sirindhorn has urged the National Human Rights Commission to investigate Phisan Manawapat for allegedly defending the coup and raising questions about his qualifications and ethics. Less than a day after the People's Party introduced Phisan Manawapat as their candidate for Minister of Foreign Affairs, concerns about his credentials arose, particularly due to his previous role as a senator, which ended less than two years ago.

According to Thai News Agency, Pavin Chachavalpongpun, a political activist, has been vocal about scrutinizing Phisan Manawapat's qualifications under Article 112 of the Constitution. This article states that a person who has recently served as a senator and whose membership ended within the last two years is ineligible to be a minister or hold a political position, except in local government roles. Pavin has issued an open letter to the People's Party and the media, urging a thorough investigation into Phisan's qualifications and ethics.

Pavin has also raised questions about the People's Party's commitment to examining the ethics of its own members, while they critique other parties. In his social media posts, he called on his followers and the media to keep a close watch on the matter. He specifically tagged Ms. Rukchanok Srinorok, a People's Party candidate for MP, questioning her willingness to investigate Phisan's ethics.

Pavin further disclosed that during his tenure at the Department of International Economic Affairs, Phisan was his direct superior, and he claimed to know him well. He accused Phisan of distorting facts in a letter to a major global media outlet, asserting that Thailand had no political prisoners during his time as Thai Ambassador to Washington. Additionally, Pavin accused Phisan of defending the coup and having an extramarital affair with a barber, which he claimed was a widely known confession within the ministry. These allegations have raised concerns about Phisan's suitability to be appointed as a party representative.
