PDRC Asserts Support for Military to Protect Sovereignty, Denies Coup Support

Bangkok: The People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) has publicly declared its alignment with the military as a measure to safeguard national sovereignty, emphatically denying any intention to support a coup. A significant meeting is scheduled for July 1, aimed at intensifying efforts to remove the prime minister and coalition parties.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Pichit Chaiyamongkol, alongside key members of the Student and People’s Network for Thailand Reform, or PDRC, clarified their position following a large rally. It was revealed that some speeches by core members seemed to advocate for a coup, prompting Mr. Pichit to issue an urgent statement. He explained that accusations from opposition parties and the government, alleging protester support for a coup, were misplaced. Instead, he emphasized that Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra should resign, and coalition parties should withdraw. The PDRC’s support for the military is solely to maintain sovereignty, not to instigate a coup.

The PDRC plans to meet with leaders of “United Power of the Land” on July 1 to strategize the rally’s future direction. Post-July 1 activities are expected to intensify, potentially moving the rally site closer to Government House, shifting from the Victory Monument area. The PDRC maintains its demand for Ms. Paethongtarn’s resignation and coalition withdrawal.

Next week, the PDRC intends to approach the Democrat Party and Chartthaipattana Party, following a similar request made to the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, which has yet to respond.

Regarding potential Constitutional Court actions against Ms. Paethongtarn, the PDRC will monitor the Pheu Thai Party’s response, whether it involves a ministerial reassignment or an appointment of a new Prime Minister. The PDRC is resolute in continuing the rally until demands are met, focused on preserving national sovereignty rather than altering power dynamics.
