Bangkok: The People's Democratic Party has issued a public apology and replaced its parliamentary candidate after uncovering an arrest warrant against the individual in connection with a money laundering case.
According to Thai News Agency, a police operation targeting a drug trafficking network across five provinces led to the discovery that one of the suspects was a Bangkok parliamentary candidate for the People's Party. Mr. Pijarn Chaowapatanawong, a member of the People's Party's executive committee and responsible for the Bangkok election campaign, urgently addressed the press. He revealed that an arrest warrant had been issued for Boonrit Raorungroj, the party's candidate for the Bang Phlat-Bangkok Noi district, due to his association with a company linked to money laundering.
Mr. Pijarn expressed sincere apologies to the public, especially to the residents of Bang Phlat and Bangkok Noi. He explained that the party had conducted thorough criminal record checks on all candidates, but the arrest warrant was issued on December 17th after these checks were completed. The party became aware of the situation only that morning when police searched Boonrit's residence. Immediately upon learning of this, the party informed Boonrit and issued a public statement, emphasizing their commitment to transparency and no protection for anyone involved.
Mr. Phicharn confirmed that the party would replace its candidate before the December 31st registration deadline. Boonrit will undergo the judicial process to prove his innocence, and the party will not interfere. The People's Party maintains its principle of "no favoritism, no favoritism," ensuring that no candidate is shielded from accountability. The issuance of the arrest warrant signifies sufficient evidence for the judicial process to proceed.
Mr. Phicharn reassured citizens that the People's Party is committed to enhancing its candidate selection process for future elections. Acknowledging that mistakes can occur, he apologized for any disappointment caused. He emphasized that "Orange, no gray" is more than just a slogan; the party is dedicated to transparency and swift action against corruption or dishonesty. The People's Party aims to govern without abusing power or protecting law-breaking associates.
