Bangkok: The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior has directed provincial governors across the nation to prioritize public safety during the 2026 Songkran festival, following the Prime Minister's guidelines to enhance safety measures. Governors have been tasked with integrating efforts from all sectors to ensure the safe travel of road users returning to their hometowns.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Arsit Sampanrat, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, has unveiled a series of measures aimed at preventing and reducing road accidents during the festive period. A seven-day "dangerous period" campaign has been established from April 10-16, 2026, under the supervision of Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, who also serves as the Chairman and Director of the Road Safety Center (RSC). Provincial governors, acting as directors of the provincial road safety centers, are to strictly enforce traffic laws and promote public awareness about safety.
The Ministry has emphasized the necessity for governors from all 76 provinces to implement the directives provided by the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior. This includes campaigns such as "Don't Drink and Drive" and establishing service points for fatigued long-distance travelers, offering snacks, water, and basic medical supplies in collaboration with private and local entities. Measures are also in place to ensure these initiatives do not impede traffic flow and prioritize the safety of personnel. Additionally, volunteers are to be stationed at checkpoints on secondary and community roads to deter risky behaviors.
An important aspect highlighted is the management of the Middle East conflict's impact, specifically concerning fuel supply. Governors are instructed to campaign for responsible fuel use and inform the public about the sufficiency of fuel during the festival. Public relations offices, local media, and officials are to use all available communication channels to reassure the public about fuel availability.
The Permanent Secretary also addressed health concerns due to anticipated high temperatures during the festival. The public is advised to monitor their health and that of family members for symptoms like heat exhaustion or heatstroke and to seek immediate medical assistance if necessary. Emergency hotlines such as 1669 and other dedicated services are available for reporting incidents and obtaining assistance during this period.
