Permanent Secretary Pulls Supajee from Controversial Interview at Government House

Bangkok: The Permanent Secretary of Commerce intervened to remove Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, Supajee Suthamphan, from an interview session. This occurred as reporters pressed her for comments on the controversy surrounding her live-streamed durian sales and the subsequent discussions in parliament. Supajee stated she was not aware of the specific details.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident took place at the Santi Maitri Building in Government House, where Supajee faced media inquiries about the House of Representatives' planned interpellation regarding her durian sales and the formation of a committee to address crop price issues. Supajee described the planned approach as "solving the problem incorrectly, scratching the wrong itch." Despite media attempts to engage her, Mr. Wutikrai Leewiraphan, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, escorted her away, citing other commitments. Supajee remarked that she was not informed about the committee's formation and requested time to review the information.

The controversy includes allegations that the durian sold during a live stream for 100 baht, in collaboration with a famous influencer, did not match its description. The opposition criticized the sale as impossible and harmful to market mechanisms. Supajee admitted she had not seen the live stream and missed the opportunity to order the durian. She mentioned that relevant agencies would need to investigate the claims regarding the durian's description.

Reporters noted that the Permanent Secretary and other officials made multiple attempts to remove Supajee from the interview setting, requesting that the media refrain from questioning her at that moment.
