Lima: Peruvian doctors have successfully separated conjoined twin girls who were born with fused spines, marking a significant achievement in the medical field. The complex surgical procedure took place at the National Institute of Child Health San Borja on December 18th.
According to Thai News Agency, the twin girls, Ailani and Alif Palacios Picon, were born prematurely on October 5, 2025, in Huannuco, Peru. The twins, who were in critical condition, were transferred to a hospital in Lima just three days after their birth. Medical officials worked diligently to stabilize their condition to prepare for the surgery.
A multidisciplinary team of medical professionals assessed the situation, with MRI scans revealing the shared spinal canal and nerve structures, which added to the complexity and risk of the surgery. Despite these challenges, the medical team successfully completed the operation in over three hours. Both Ailani and Alif received ongoing care in the neurosurgery ICU until last Wednesday.
The parents, Menelo Palacios and Marleni Picon, who are farmers in Lata, expressed deep gratitude for the care and expertise provided by the medical staff. The hospital acknowledged the achievement as significant, given the complexity of the case and the challenges arising from the twins' premature birth.
