Pheu Thai Calls for Swift Election Investigation Amid Transparency Concerns

Bangkok: Pheu Thai is urging the Election Commission to expedite the investigation and release election data to address concerns about transparency and integrity in the recent electoral process.

According to Thai News Agency, the Pheu Thai Party has raised alarm over three main issues that could undermine public confidence in the democratic system: abuse of money, state interference, and ballot stuffing. The party has called for the Election Commission to quickly investigate these matters, disclose all election-related data, and consider a recount to settle public disputes.

Mr. Chulaphan Amornvivat, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, along with Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai and Mr. Krit Euawong, highlighted the party's stance on election transparency during a press conference. They emphasized receiving complaints from the public, election observers, and parliamentary candidates about the transparency of the election process, which they believe could erode trust in the democratic system.

The party has collected and verified information from each constituency, asserting that their concerns are evidence-based and lawful. Their observations include unusual financial activities that call for clarification from the Election Commission, especially regarding the Bank of Thailand's stance on suspicious cash withdrawals during the election period. They question the outcome of investigations into these financial movements and whether any actions violated election laws.

Additionally, the Pheu Thai Party has received numerous complaints about state interference in elections. Reports suggest that village headmen, military personnel, and local administrators have been involved in exerting pressure, prompting the party to demand a clear explanation from the Election Commission.

The management of the election process is another area of concern. Issues such as non-transparent vote counting, ballot stuffing, and the improper handling of ballots have sparked public debate. The party has noted discrepancies in vote counts and the irregular use of discretion by election officials, which have led to significant changes in vote outcomes in several districts.

Mr. Chulaphan emphasized that these issues are detrimental to public confidence and the democratic process. The Pheu Thai Party is advocating for fairness and transparency, urging the Election Commission to act swiftly to address public concerns. They believe that a recount is feasible and beneficial to ease tensions and assure fairness in the election results. Addressing public demands and ensuring transparency could reassure the public and uphold the integrity of the election process.
