Pheu Thai Party Leader Supports New Constitution Amid Diverse Political Standpoints

Bangkok: Mr. Chulaphan Amornvivat, leader of the Pheu Thai Party, has confirmed his support for the drafting of a new constitution, marking it as a core matter for his party. Mr. Chaturon Chaisang has been actively campaigning on this issue, highlighting the party's ongoing efforts since 2019 to amend the constitution. So far, only the amendment regarding the origin of Members of Parliament (MPs) has been achieved, with other aspects failing to pass the Senate in previous sessions. He views a referendum as an essential mechanism to exert political pressure on both the Senate and the House of Representatives to align with the public's will.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Sirikanya Tansakul from the People's Party also supports the drafting of a completely new constitution, considering the referendum a critical first step. The party is actively campaigning for approval and has prepared a draft amendment to Article 256, ready to be submitted when parliament convenes.

Abhisit Vejjajiva of the Democrat Party, while not campaigning for constitutional amendments, acknowledges significant challenges, especially concerning Article 256 and the Senate's role. He proposes initiating amendments to the senator selection process and independent organizations, recognizing the complexity and time required for such changes, which necessitate cooperation from all parties.

Mr. Sihasak Phuangketkaew concurs with the need for constitutional amendments but insists on conditions. He emphasizes that Chapters 1 and 2 of the 2017 Constitution should remain unchanged. He advocates for a transparent amendment process that considers opinions from all sectors to achieve broad consensus.
