Mr. Chulaphan Amornvivat, the leader and prime ministerial candidate of the Pheu Thai Party, along with Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, a key party figure, highlighted the need for transparency in the election process following numerous complaints from citizens, election observers, and the party's parliamentary candidates.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chulaphan expressed the party's worries about irregularities that might undermine public confidence in the election and the democratic system. The Pheu Thai Party is actively gathering facts and investigating information across every district, ensuring that all actions are evidence-based and within the legal framework.
The party has identified three primary concerns based on preliminary information. The first issue involves suspicions of power abuse through financial means in several areas. Reports of irregular financial transactions have surfaced, prompting calls for the Election Commission to clarify and investigate thoroughly. This is especially crucial given the Bank of Thailand's comments on unusual cash withdrawals during the election period, raising suspicions about potential election law violations. Furthermore, there have been public complaints about arrests involving evidence such as cash, voter lists, and individuals in various areas, urging the Election Commission to expedite legal proceedings.
The second issue pertains to the alleged misuse of state power to interfere with the election process. Complaints have emerged about the roles of village headmen, sub-district chiefs, and the involvement of the military, police, and administrative officials in certain areas. The Pheu Thai Party is calling for a fair and impartial investigation into these claims.
The third issue focuses on the Election Commission's management problems, which have attracted widespread criticism. Concerns include a lack of transparency in vote counting, discrepancies where total votes exceeded voter numbers, incorrect tearing of over 50 ballots, recounts in certain districts, and instances of dramatic changes in vote counts from a loser to a winner. Additionally, there have been irregularities in the discretionary judgment of election officials at polling stations.
Mr. Chulaphan stressed that these issues significantly affect public confidence in the election. The Pheu Thai Party is steadfast in demanding justice without creating conflict and urges the Election Commission to conduct a transparent investigation, disclose information to the public, and respond to public demands concretely.
