Phuket Commerce Department Addresses Coconut Pricing Concerns

Phuket: The Phuket Commerce Department has clarified recent concerns regarding the pricing of coconuts at Patong Beach. Contrary to claims of exorbitant pricing, officials found that coconuts are being sold at 100 baht each, not the rumored 150 baht.

According to Thai News Agency, a video posted by a foreign visitor on TikTok alleged that coconuts were being sold for 150 baht each at Patong Beach, sparking criticism and concerns about the potential negative impact on tourism. In response, Ms. Waranit Apiratjirawong, a Phuket Provincial Commerce Officer, instructed the Inspection and Operations Division to collaborate with Patong Municipality officials for a thorough inspection on April 24th. Their findings confirmed that most vendors were selling coconuts at the stated price of 100 baht, with prices ranging from 50-80 baht at shops located further from the beach.

The difference in pricing is attributed to various factors, including the purchase cost of 30-40 baht per coconut, transportation, seasonal variations, expenses for maintaining freshness, labor costs, and spoilage risks. Additionally, the sale of goods along the beach is regulated within designated zones by community enterprise groups. However, previous unauthorized vendors may have contributed to the confusion over pricing.

To maintain consistency and prevent future misunderstandings, the Phuket Provincial Commerce Office is coordinating with Patong Municipality to brief business operators from April 27-30, 2026. This meeting will focus on adherence to the Central Committee on Prices of Goods and Services Announcement No. 68 of 2025, which mandates the clear display of prices. Non-compliance will result in penalties to ensure the protection of Phuket's tourism image.
