Bangkok: Phumtham Vejjayachai, the acting Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, has granted authority to the military to manage the escalating situation along the Thai-Cambodian border. The decision was made following a special meeting of the National Security Council and the Cabinet to address the recent clashes that resulted in the deaths of 10 civilians and 1 soldier.
According to Thai News Agency, the situation began with Cambodia allegedly initiating the conflict by opening fire on Thai territory, leading to the use of heavy weaponry. The Thai government has not declared war but has empowered the military to respond appropriately while adhering to international law. The incident took place across four provinces: Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, and Buriram, prompting the evacuation of residents within 50 kilometers of the border.
Mr. Phumtham condemned Cambodia’s use of heavy weapons, which impacted civilian areas such as a gas station, convenience store, and a hospital. He emphasized the importance of peaceful solutions and dialogue, asserting Thailand’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty. The Thai military, particularly the 2nd Army Region, has been tasked with ensuring the security of the border area, and the government has taken measures to evacuate and compensate affected civilians.
The Ministry of Public Health has converted district hospitals into field hospitals and evacuated patients to safer areas. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has downgraded diplomatic relations with Cambodia and is working on de-escalating the situation. Mr. Phumtham stated that bilateral talks would only occur once the situation has stabilized, as Thailand did not initiate the conflict.
While Cambodia has submitted a letter to the UN, Thailand’s Foreign Minister, Mr. Maris Sengiampong, has already briefed the UN Security Council on the situation. The Thai government has assured transparency in its actions, though tactical details remain confidential.
Mr. Phumtham emphasized that the military operation aims to conclude swiftly, and Thailand will protect its sovereignty without escalating tensions further. He assured the public of the government’s commitment to their safety and the nation’s territorial integrity.
