Bangkok: Phumtham Wechayachai, a prominent figure in the Pheu Thai Party, has issued a stern warning to civil servants against becoming tools for political parties during election campaigns. He emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality and competing based on the trust of the people. Phumtham also cautioned that any misuse of power would be addressed if his party returns to power.
According to Thai News Agency, Phumtham highlighted the problematic use of bureaucratic mechanisms by political parties in past elections, noting that such practices have been particularly evident recently. He expressed respect and trust for the bureaucratic system while urging civil servants to adopt a neutral and transparent role during elections. He acknowledged the crucial role civil servants play in national development but lamented their frequent manipulation through intimidation and harassment aimed at securing favorable outcomes, with non-compliance often leading to adverse consequences for their careers.
Phumtham disclosed that he had received reports indicating that bureaucratic tools were being leveraged to benefit political parties. He cited examples of district chiefs and ministers summoning civil servants, village heads, and community leaders for discussions, as well as incidents of officials distributing political party shirts, actions that violate election laws.
Reaffirming his belief in the integrity of civil servants, Phumtham acknowledged that some might succumb to bribery or intimidation. He called for collective efforts to protect sovereignty, neutrality, and justice in the election process, to prevent manipulation by those in power or with influence.
Phumtham also provided an example from the northeastern region where village headmen were directed to file lawsuits with the anti-corruption center, highlighting payments made to them as political canvassers. He stressed that these actions undermine democracy and pointed out irregularities in the positions and transfers of some district officers. He advocated for a transparent fight for power, reflecting the people's will, and urged civil servants to understand the significance of the upcoming election on February 8th as a true reflection of the people's will.
He reminded civil servants that those currently in power are not guaranteed to retain their positions and encouraged them to uphold their dignity and conduct activities transparently. Phumtham emphasized that reliance on those in power is temporary and urged for adherence to the law in the event of a government change. He called on the public to be vigilant and submit any additional information for further investigation and transparency.
In his concluding remarks, Phumtham urged civil servants to maintain their dignity and rights, asserting that political power is fleeting.
