Mogadishu: A plane made an emergency landing in Somalia but skidded off the runway and into the sea. Fortunately, the pilots managed to prevent serious damage and save the lives of all 55 people on board.
According to Thai News Agency, a Star Sky Aviation Fokker 50 aircraft of Somalia experienced problems shortly after takeoff from Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu and was forced to make an emergency landing. However, the plane skidded off the runway and into the sea off the coast of the Indian Ocean. All 50 passengers and 5 crew members were safely evacuated, with no injuries reported.
The pilot revealed that the aircraft experienced problems shortly after takeoff, prompting a request for an emergency landing. The plane then skidded off the runway before being forced to a stop in high water. The airline commended the pilot for maintaining control under challenging conditions but did not disclose the extent of the malfunction or damage, only stating that one wing struck the ground during the skid.
The Somali Ministry of Transportation stated that the flight was en route to the northern city of Galgayo but experienced problems approximately 15 minutes after takeoff. Rescue teams were able to save everyone on board, and only the aircraft itself sustained damage. The Somali Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation to determine the cause of the accident, specifically whether there were any technical issues with the aircraft during takeoff and landing attempts.
