Bangkok: Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has urgently summoned key ministers and economic agencies to Government House to discuss strategies to tackle the energy crisis, following the expiration of a 15-day diesel price freeze.
According to Thai News Agency, the meeting was held amidst concerns over fluctuating oil prices, exacerbated by ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Economic officials emphasized that no borrowing from the oil fund has occurred and stressed the importance of closely monitoring the situation.
The meeting saw the participation of high-ranking government officials and representatives from various economic sectors. Attendees included Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn; Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Ekniti Nitithanprapas; Minister of Commerce, Supajee Suthamphan; Governor of the Bank of Thailand, Witai Rattanagorn; Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council, Danucha Pichayanun; Director of the Budget Bureau, Anan Kaewkamnerd; and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Arsit Sampanrat.
This urgent discussion was prompted by the expiration of the diesel price freeze, raising concerns about potential impacts on energy prices due to the Middle Eastern conflict. Prior to the meeting, Mr. Ekniti mentioned that the discussion was a continuation from the previous day's meeting, focusing on strategies post the diesel price freeze.
Regarding rumors of a potential emergency decree for borrowing to stabilize the Fuel Fund, Mr. Ekniti clarified that Mr. Pakorn Nilapraphan, Secretary-General of the Council of State, attended the meeting to address legal considerations. However, he confirmed that no loans have been taken and highlighted the need for vigilance given the caretaker status of the government, which limits its ability to enact new laws.
