Bangkok: The Prime Minister has reiterated that it is the police's responsibility to coordinate with Interpol to arrest Ben Smith. This statement follows an announcement from Ben Smith's lawyer, Mr. Witoon Kengngan, indicating that Smith will not return to Thailand.
According to Thai News Agency, the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Anutin Charnvirakul, discussed the situation in light of a report from the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) regarding potential scrutiny of political transactions after an arrest warrant was issued for Ben Smith. The Prime Minister confirmed that all actions are being conducted in accordance with legal protocols.
In response to questions about whether Interpol's involvement is necessary to bring Ben Smith to justice, the Prime Minister stated that this matter falls under police jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Mr. Thepsu Bovornchotidara, Secretary-General of AMLO, assured that Ben Smith's absence from Thailand will not impact the ongoing asset seizure proceedings in civil court. These proceedings are managed by AMLO through the Attorney General's Office, and Smith retains the right to contest the charges.
When probed about the possibility of further asset seizures against Ben Smith, Mr. Thepsu opted not to comment. He also refrained from answering queries about potential asset seizures involving other politicians. The Prime Minister has expressed support for efforts in combating scammers, drug trafficking, and related crimes, noting visible progress in these areas.
