Bangkok: The Prime Minister, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Mr. Suriya Juangroongruangkit, visited the M82 project site to ensure its readiness and support safe travel for people during the upcoming Songkran Festival. The Prime Minister stressed the importance of halting construction and returning the road surfaces for safe and convenient travel during the festival.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Suriya revealed that Ms. Paethongtarn Shinawatra, the Prime Minister, inspected the Special Highway No. 82, the elevated road Bang Khun Thian – Ban Phaeo (M82). The visit aimed to assess traffic readiness on Highway No. 35 (Rama II Road) and follow up on the project’s progress, which is anticipated to be completed by the end of the year.

For the Songkran Festival 2025, the Prime Minister has issued directives to halt construction and return road surfaces from 11-17 April 2025. This measure is to ensure safe travel during the festival. All construction materials and equipment must be cleared to allow uninterrupted travel. The Department of Highways (DOH) has been tasked with coordinating with police and relevant agencies to ensure safety throughout the festival.

Mr. Suriya also provided updates on the expressway project spanning Rama III – Dao Khanong – Outer Bangkok Ring Road. The construction is 89.02% complete, with some sections opened in January. The intercity motorway project No. 82 is progressing with over 80% completion. Civil works are expected to conclude this year, with public test drives scheduled for 2025. The system work is in the phase of selecting private investors for a full service launch by 2028. The M82 project aims to alleviate traffic congestion, enhance travel convenience, and improve safety.

Furthermore, all relevant agencies have been instructed to integrate their efforts in disseminating route information, organizing traffic systems, and addressing risky areas. Emphasis is placed on maintaining construction standards and using quality materials, prioritizing safety for road users and construction workers. The project is set to open for service by 2025, fulfilling its construction goals.

Mr. Suriya highlighted the significance of the Highway No. 82 project, stating that it will enhance the logistics system’s efficiency, connect the central region with other areas, reduce travel costs, and improve safety, particularly in the southern region, a key economic center.

Mr. Apirat Chaiwongnoi, Director-General of the Department of Highways, affirmed that the project will adhere to safety measures and standards as per the construction contract. Post Songkran Festival, the construction will be accelerated to meet the planned timeline. Upon completion, the M82, featuring 3 lanes, will offer an efficient travel alternative to the South.
