Bangkok: The Prime Minister has officially declared that February 8, 2026, will be the day for a significant referendum. Voters will be asked to decide on the necessity of drafting a new constitution. This announcement was released today through the Royal Gazette website, with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul signing off on the decision.
According to Thai News Agency, the official statement outlines that the Cabinet aims to support a referendum and constitutional amendments by engaging public opinion and ensuring participation from all societal sectors. This move is in alignment with the Constitutional Court's ruling No. 18/2025, issued on September 10, 2025. The Cabinet believes that holding the referendum will honor the Constitution's intent and sees it as a necessary step to draft a new Constitution, in accordance with the Referendum Act B.E. 2564 (2021).
In addition, the Election Commission has declared that the general election for members of the House of Representatives will also occur on February 8, 2026. The decision to align the referendum date with the general election aims to efficiently use public funds, offer maximum convenience to citizens, and reduce the logistical burden on the Election Commission. The Cabinet has exercised its authority under several sections of the Constitution and the Referendum Act to establish this dual event on February 8, 2026, posing the question to the public: "Do you agree that a new constitution should be drafted?"
