Bangkok: The Thai Poker Association celebrated a monumental achievement for Thailand as "Pro Punnat Punsri" ascended to the pinnacle of the poker world, securing the top spot in the Global Poker Index (GPI) 2025 rankings. This celebration not only highlighted Pro Punnat's individual accomplishment but also marked a significant milestone for Thai sports.
According to Thai News Agency, the Thai Poker Association organized a grand event on February 15, 2026, at the Wanalai Ballroom and Diamond Garden, Grand Center Point Lumpini Hotel in Bangkok. The event was a joint effort with "Te Na Tak," Thailand's leading poker community, to honor Pro Punnat, the association's first member, for his exceptional achievement and contribution to Thailand's prestige in the global arena.
The prestigious ceremony was graced by Mr. Thana Chulapannasak, President of the Thai Poker Association, Ms. Oranit Engchuan, Strategy Director of Te Na Tak Co., Ltd., and many other distinguished guests. Pro Punnat's rise to the top of the 2025 GPI rankings, officially announced on January 7, 2025, marks him as the first Asian athlete to earn the GPI World Player of the Year title.
Pro Punnat, with an illustrious 18-year career, has amassed prize money exceeding US$31,793,767. His remarkable performance, particularly in 2015, propelled him to the top of the global rankings. GPI's criteria, which include competition results, event quality, participant numbers, and prize money, underscore his comprehensive sporting prowess, earning him top honors in all major award categories.
Pro Punnat expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts in Thailand to promote poker as a sport, culminating in its registration by the Sports Authority of Thailand last year. He emphasized the importance of the past year and thanked fellow Thais and his poker family for their continuous support. He remains committed to representing Thailand in global competitions, demonstrating poker's potential as a professional endeavor.
Mr. Thana Chulapannasak reflected on this achievement as a source of national pride and a testament to the progress of Thai poker. The association plans to launch a website for public engagement and education and collaborate with educational institutions to integrate poker into academic curricula.
