PTT Highlights Strategy to Transform Thailand into a Physical LNG Delivery Hub

Bangkok: PTT Public Company Limited has underscored the significance of resilience in modern energy security, articulating a strategic vision to elevate Thailand as a 'Physical LNG Delivery Hub'. Amidst geopolitical volatility and potential supply chain disruptions, the global LNG market is evolving from a linear trading model to a more interconnected system.

According to Thai News Agency, at the Gastech 2026 global energy conference, Mr. Bandhit Thammaprajit, COO of the Upstream Petroleum and Natural Gas Business Group at PTT, discussed the market adjustments and Thailand's potential role as a regional energy delivery hub. He emphasized the shift from merely ensuring sufficient gas supply to delivering energy accurately and timely amidst fluctuating market conditions.

Mr. Bandhit highlighted the necessity for flexible energy infrastructure to meet the growing demand in Asia, supported by diversified supply from North America, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region. He advocated for infrastructure development to enable commercial services such as reload and re-export, break-bulk, and ship-to-ship operations, alongside a balanced approach combining long-term contracts with spot market opportunities.

Diversification in production sources, geographic locations, and contract structures was emphasized as crucial for risk management. Mr. Bandhit also introduced the concept of 'virtual inventory' and in-tank volume swapping as innovative strategies to enhance the utilization of existing infrastructure.

Challenges from the producer's side, such as the final investment decision and meeting construction schedules, remain pivotal for long-term stability. Mr. Bandhit's vision reflects an approach to transition Thailand from an end-user to a regional energy trader, leveraging its strong infrastructure and innovative contract strategies to become a major LNG delivery hub in ASEAN.

Mr. Chaturong Woravit Surawatana, Senior VP of the International Trading Business Unit at PTT, stressed the importance of collaboration between producers and buyers in developing flexible contracts and diverse pricing strategies. Such collaboration is seen as vital for maintaining a resilient and adaptable LNG market in Asia, ensuring long-term energy security.
