Bangkok: The Department of Highways is expediting the restoration of the road surface on the main Rama 2 Road, kilometers 29-32, to accommodate inbound traffic to Bangkok, starting today. Traffic management on the outbound side is also being expedited to alleviate afternoon congestion after the site of the collapsed LG crane has been cleared.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Piyapong Chiwatnakulpaisan, Director-General of the Department of Highways, outlined measures to alleviate traffic congestion on Rama II Road (Highway No. 35) following the LG crane collapse. This incident necessitated the closure of main traffic lanes between kilometer markers 29 and 32, which lasted 24 hours a day since January 15, 2026. Though the accident site has been cleared, some construction areas remain closed for safety. A meeting with stakeholders was held to assess the feasibility of adding traffic lanes to ease congestion, and a proactive traffic management plan was implemented.
The Highway Office 13 (Bangkok) and the Samut Sakhon Highway District were instructed to coordinate with contractors for the expedited opening of one lane in both directions between kilometer markers 29 and 32. This aims to alleviate congestion during peak periods.
On the inbound side towards Bangkok, a main lane will be open to the public from 8:00 AM today. For the outbound side towards Samut Songkhram, a reversible lane will be provided to allow outbound vehicles to pass through the work area safely, opening from 4:00 PM today.
The main road lanes will operate only during the daytime. At night, all main lanes will be closed from 8:00 PM to 5:30 AM, with road users directed to use the parallel roads to ensure safety during ongoing construction.
The Department has also improved access points between main and parallel roads to prevent bottlenecks. Highway police and traffic volunteers are on duty around the clock to assist and maintain traffic flow. Due to partial closures, traffic may be heavier than usual, and the public is advised to allow extra travel time or avoid the route during peak hours.
Public safety remains a priority for the Department of Highways, alongside ensuring smooth traffic flow. For inquiries or to report issues, the public can contact the Department's hotline at 1586, available 24 hours a day.
