Bangkok: Good news has emerged for Chumphon Province as the "Sawi Pineapple" has been officially registered as a Geographical Indication (GI) product, promising an economic boost of over 27 million baht per year. Airin Phanrit, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, shared that this development marks the pineapple as the seventh GI product from the region.
According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Commerce announced the registration of Sawi Pineapple as a GI product. This joins a list of other premium products from Chumphon, including the Chumphon Lady Finger Banana, Lamae Golden Banana, Chumphon Yellow Rice, Khao Thalu Coffee, Tham Sing Coffee, and Chumphon Durian, all previously recognized for their unique geographical ties.
Sawi Pineapple, a Queen variety grown in the Sawi District, benefits from the distinct geographical features of the area. The region's sloping hillsides and mineral-rich soil from the Tenasserim Mountains contribute to the pineapple's sweet, crispy fruit with a signature aroma. Its unique characteristics make it a favored souvenir along Phetkasem Road, drawing tourists and contributing significantly to the local economy.
The six previously registered GI products from Chumphon Province collectively generate over 32,028 million baht annually. This underscores the province's potential as a hub for high-quality food resources, complementing its famous tourist attractions and cultural heritage. The GI registration is anticipated to enhance the value of Sawi pineapples, offering increased income opportunities for local farmers. Ms. Airin encouraged farmers with unique geographical products to pursue GI registration through the Department of Intellectual Property's One-Stop Intellectual Property Service Center or via their hotline for further assistance.
