Sawi Pineapple Registered as Geographical Indication Product in Chumphon Province

Chumphon: "Sawi Pineapple" has been registered as a GI (Geographical Indication) product, becoming the 7th premium product of Chumphon Province. This development is expected to generate over 27 million baht in annual economic value and significantly increase income for farmers.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Airin Phanrit, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, announced that the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce, has officially recognized Sawi Pineapple as a GI product. This registration marks it as the seventh GI product from Chumphon Province, following Chumphon Lady Finger Banana, Lamae Golden Banana, Chumphon Yellow Rice, Khao Thalu Coffee, Tham Sing Coffee, and Chumphon Durian.

The Sawi pineapple, a Queen variety, is cultivated in the Sawi District of Chumphon Province. The region's landscape includes sloping hillsides and lowlands with well-drained, mineral-rich soil nourished by water sources from the Tenasserim Mountains. These conditions produce sweet, crispy pineapples with a distinct aroma. The fruit is characterized by its small, relatively prominent eyes with deep grooves on the rind, dry and dark yellow flesh, low fiber content, and a crisp, edible core. Known as a popular souvenir from Chumphon Province, Sawi pineapples are easily found along Phetkasem Road (Highway 41), the main route to the South, and are highly favored by tourists, contributing to annual revenue exceeding 27 million baht for the local community.

Ms. Airin highlighted that the six previously registered GI products from Chumphon province collectively bring in over 32,028 million baht annually. This showcases Chumphon's potential as a leading source of high-quality food resources, comparable to its tourist attractions and cultural heritage. She expressed confidence that the GI registration will enhance the value of Sawi pineapples and boost income for the farmers who grow them.

Farmers or communities with products tied to specific geographical areas are encouraged to seek guidance on GI registration at the One-Stop Intellectual Property Service Center (IP One) of the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Commerce.
