Narathiwat: The commander of the 4th Army Region has ordered the highest level of security measures following a series of bombings and arson attacks at 11 gas stations in three southern border provinces. He acknowledged the incident has had an economic impact.
According to Thai News Agency, on January 11, 2026, Lieutenant General Norathip Poynok, Commander of the 4th Army Region and Director of the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward, provided details of the bombings and arson attacks on PTT gas stations in Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat. Investigations revealed attacks at PTT gas stations in Pattani (2 locations), Yala (4 locations), and Narathiwat (5 locations). He directed all task force commanders and military commanders in the area to escalate security measures, particularly at the affected PTT gas stations and checkpoints, to the highest level of security. Additionally, all border patrol companies were instructed to close all border crossings except for permanent border checkpoints, where customs and immigration officers have been deployed to conduct strict checks on all individuals.
The Commander of the 4th Army Region also considered security measures in economic areas, noting that National Children's Day events had recently taken place, attracting large crowds in Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat. Despite the positive economic stimulation from these events, the overnight incident disrupted the improving economic system. Measures to address the situation are under discussion.
Regarding today's Subdistrict Administrative Organization elections, Lt. Gen. Norathip informed the Provincial Task Force Commander to tighten security measures. Police officers have been deployed to ensure safety, and the importance of this has been emphasized.
Lt. Gen. Norathip addressed the possibility of the perpetrators using similar tactics at various locations, considering potential intimidation tactics against voters. A meeting is scheduled to finalize details regarding the incidents and their potential political implications.
The Commander emphasized the need for discussions with the negotiating team in light of the recent violence, referencing a previous agreement that all parties must cease violence. Further discussions are necessary to determine how to proceed following these events.
