New york: A severe winter storm has struck the United States, bringing freezing weather and heavy snowfall as families across the country brace for the worst. A state of emergency has been declared in more than 15 states.
According to Thai News Agency, more than 200 million Americans are likely to face the unusually severe winter storm that began on Friday. Heavy snowfall and freezing rain are forecast for at least 15 states and Washington, D.C. The U.S. National Weather Service reports that the storm is moving across much of the United States, creating extremely dangerous weather conditions. As it moves eastward from the Highlands and Rocky Mountains, it is expected to bring snow to cities including Memphis, Nashville, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, and Washington, D.C. The Arctic air mass accompanying the storm will bring sub-freezing temperatures and frigid winds, increasing the risk of hypothermia and frostbite for those exposed to the cold.
Areas from Colorado and West Virginia to Boston, Massachusetts, could see more than a foot of snow. In northeastern New Jersey and southeastern New York State, including New York City, snow accumulation is expected to reach 10-14 inches from Sunday morning through Monday. Additionally, wind-induced temperatures in these areas could drop to as low as -23 degrees Celsius.
Several governors, including those from Arkansas, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, North Carolina, and South Carolina, have declared states of emergency. This declaration allows emergency personnel, including the National Guard, to mobilize in response to the storm. In New York, the governor has ordered the preparation of over 1,600 snowplows and more than 114,000 tons of defrosting salt. Residents have been urged to work from home and to stock up on food and essential supplies.
Flight cancellations have also been significant, with more than 3,200 flights to and from the United States canceled on Saturday. Another 4,800 flights are expected to be affected on Sunday. Weather officials have warned drivers to avoid traveling throughout the weekend, as travel is expected to be virtually impossible during the most severe storms.
