Bangkok: Prime Minister Sihasak has addressed recent criticisms regarding Thailand's stance on the ongoing Middle East conflict by engaging in discussions with the Iranian ambassador concerning the evacuation of Thai citizens. He clarified that he had not engaged in any discussions with the United States about the use of U-Tapao Air Base as a military base, emphasizing Thailand's desire for peace over military action.
According to Thai News Agency, Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkaew responded to reports that US Ambassador to Thailand, Sean K. O'Neill, had approached the Prime Minister about potentially utilizing U-Tapao Airport for military operations against Iran. Minister Sihasak refuted these claims, stating that the dialogue was centered around diplomatic relations, updates on the current situation, ongoing trade and import tariff negotiations, and defense cooperation. He underlined that the U-Tapao Airport's use is part of normal security cooperation, which includes activities like refueling, but assured that establishing it as an operational base for another country is not aligned with Thai policy.
In discussions with the Iranian ambassador to Thailand, Mr. Sihasak highlighted the priority of evacuating Thai citizens from Iran, ensuring their safety amidst escalating tensions. While he confirmed that there is a plan for the evacuation, he refrained from disclosing specific dates, citing the need for secure evacuation routes. He also mentioned coordination efforts with the United States and Israel regarding the evacuation plan, stressing the humanitarian nature of the operation.
In response to the Iranian ambassador's comments on Thailand potentially acting as a mediator for peace, Mr. Sihasak affirmed Thailand's commitment to peace. Addressing concerns from former officials and foreign affairs experts about Thailand's clarity in its stance, he reiterated that the safety and welfare of Thai citizens, especially the 100,000 residing in the Middle East, are paramount. He emphasized that Thailand is not a party to the conflict and advocates for peaceful resolutions through diplomatic channels, international law, and adherence to the UN Charter.
