Southern Thai Provinces Braced for Flash Floods and Landslides

Bangkok: Seven southern provinces have been cautioned to remain alert for potential flash floods between December 25-28, 2025. The government has issued this warning in anticipation of flash floods, landslides, overflowing rivers, and mudslides impacting these areas.

According to Thai News Agency, Ms. Airin Phanrit, Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, stated that the government has alerted the residents of Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat about the impending weather threats. The relatively strong northeast monsoon affecting the Gulf of Thailand, the southern region, and the Andaman Sea is expected to bring increased rainfall, particularly in the eastern part of the southern region. Some areas might experience heavy to very heavy rainfall, and wave conditions in the lower Gulf are intensifying, with waves potentially exceeding 2 meters during thunderstorms.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has been instructed to coordinate with the aforementioned provinces and the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Centers in Regions 11 and 12, located in Surat Thani and Songkhla, respectively. These regions are being prepared for increased rainfall and the potential for flooding. Officials are tasked with monitoring weather conditions, rainfall, and water levels, while disaster relief teams equipped with heavy machinery are on standby to provide prompt assistance in high-risk areas, especially where rainfall exceeds 90 millimeters in a 24-hour period.

Furthermore, officials will be deployed to monitor high-risk areas continuously and respond to emergencies around the clock. The provinces have been asked to disseminate information about the weather conditions to the public. Residents in high-risk areas are urged to stay informed and follow government instructions to prepare for the situation adequately.
