Bangkok: Trial runs of the KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 diesel railcars are set to begin on April 20, 2026, as the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) gears up to launch these new railcars as feeder trains between Don Mueang and Ayutthaya. The initiative aims to connect the Red Line and Don Mueang Airport, providing a cost-effective travel option during a period of rising energy prices.
According to Thai News Agency, the SRT is preparing to introduce the KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 railcars as a feeder service, connecting Bangkok and Ayutthaya province. This service will facilitate passenger travel by linking to the Red Line suburban railway and Don Mueang Airport over a six-month trial period starting April 20, 2026.
Mr. Anan Pothinimdaeng, Deputy Governor and Acting Governor of the SRT, stated that the SRT is committed to developing its railway network and improving public transportation connections. To this end, 20 KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 diesel railcars, acquired from East Japan Railway Company (JR East), have been refurbished for use in Thailand. Six of these cars are ready for trial service on the Don Mueang - Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya - Don Mueang route, offering a convenient travel option and reducing travel costs.
The service will operate from Monday to Friday with six round-trip trains daily, during the trial period from April 20th to October 31st, 2026. The route will include 8 stops and 1 rest stop, featuring stations such as Don Mueang, Rangsit, Chiang Rak, and Ayutthaya. The diesel multiple unit trains have undergone system upgrades to enhance passenger comfort and safety, including the engine, electrical system, and interior improvements like air conditioning and ample luggage storage.
This route will also serve as a key transportation hub in Bangkok, connecting passengers from the Red Line suburban train at Rangsit Station and those traveling to Don Mueang Airport. It will provide convenience for students of Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus, and other public transport users in the area. The service is expected to accommodate at least 1,000 passengers daily.
Mr. Anan emphasized that the introduction of the KIHA 40 and KIHA 48 railcars demonstrates the SRT's dedication to enhancing service quality and expanding travel options. This initiative aims to decrease private vehicle usage, reduce traffic congestion, and promote efficient public rail transport. Post-trial, the SRT will assess results to further develop the service, aspiring to upgrade the rail system into a sustainable national network.
