Surin Armory Blast Blamed on Extreme Heat

Surin: Thai disaster officials on Wednesday deployed foam and water trucks to cool down the ruins of a Border Patrol Police armory in Surin province, following a massive fire and series of explosions that officials believe were triggered by a multi-day heatwave. The blaze broke out at approximately 7:30 p.m. Tuesday within the Sub-Division 21 compound, triggering thunderous detonations of stored munitions that lasted for four hours before firefighters could bring the inferno under control.

According to Thai News Agency, the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office reported that two of the site's six storage buildings were completely destroyed. The armory held a significant stockpile of heavy weaponry, including RPGs, mortars, TNT, and C4 explosives. Officials noted that while the blasts were violent, six-meter-high earthen bunkers surrounding the structures successfully directed the shockwaves upward, preventing a much larger catastrophe for the surrounding community.
