Thai Chamber of Commerce Praises Government for Easing Border Checkpoints

Bangkok: The Thai Chamber of Commerce has expressed its gratitude towards the Thai government and military following the positive outcomes of the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, which resulted in the easing of border checkpoint restrictions. This initiative, starting in the provinces of Chanthaburi and Trat, aims to alleviate the challenges faced by businesses and the public due to strict border controls.

According to Thai News Agency, Dr. Poj Aramwattananon, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Board of Trade of Thailand, highlighted the significance of the GBC meeting held in Koh Kong Province, Cambodia. The meeting, which involved discussions between Thailand and Cambodia, marked a pivotal moment in fostering peace and cooperation through bilateral mechanisms. The focus was on border management and easing restrictions on certain checkpoints, ultimately benefiting business, border trade, and international transportation.

The information indicates that a strategic approach will be employed to manage border areas based on the level of tension. Zone 1, identified as high tension, includes the provinces of Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, and Buriram, under the jurisdiction of Army Area 2. Zone 2, encompassing Sa Kaeo, falls under Army Area 1’s responsibility. Zone 3, comprising Chanthaburi and Trat, experiences lower tension compared to the other areas.

This zoning strategy has paved the way for relaxing restrictions, particularly in Zone 3, due to the lower tension levels and requests from business operators for leniency. The Chanthaburi-Trat Task Force has been tasked with implementing these measures, which are designed to enhance security while coordinating with the Customs Department, the Ministry of Commerce, and industry sectors to facilitate informed negotiations.

Dr. Poj extended his appreciation to the Thai government, the Ministry of Defense, represented by Acting Minister of Defense Gen. Nattapol Nakphanich, the Royal Thai Armed Forces, and all involved sectors for their concerted efforts in driving negotiations to achieve tangible outcomes. This development is expected to restore normalcy for the public and enable businesses in low-risk areas to resume economic activities smoothly.
